Tool set of geologic map symbols for marking up geologic maps, cross sections, and field sheets, following the FGDC Digital Cartographic Standard for Geologic Map Symbolization (FGDC-STD-013-2006). This tool set covers 8 categories with 1,480 tools, available in a standard colors version (the inks of the standard: black, magenta folds, blue water, brown contours, and more) and a redline version. The 789 line tools are native Polyline markups with 678 custom line styles, so dashes, teeth, hachures, ticks, query marks, and arrows run along any path you draw. The 663 point symbols and decorations are groups of native Bluebeam markups with editable dip, plunge, and label text, and the 28 area tools are Polygon markups with the standard's fills, borders, and hatch patterns. Every tool is named after its FGDC reference number, so placed markups list and count by name in the Markups List.

Examples of tools included:

  • Contacts, key beds, and dikes
    • Contacts, internal, gradational, and unconformable contacts, certain or queried, and accurate, approximate, inferred, or concealed
    • Key beds, clay beds, coal and clinkered coal beds, and beds of economically important commodities, with outcrop areas
    • Dikes in six options and dikes intruding faults, with dip and lineation decorations
  • Faults
    • Generic, normal, low-angle normal, low-angle, and reverse faults
    • Rotational or scissor, strike-slip, and oblique-slip faults with their sense of offset
    • Thrust, overturned thrust, detachment, master detachment, and listric faults in every option of the standard
    • Fault decorations: U and D blocks, ball and bar, relative-motion arrows, and displacement values
  • Scarps and shear zones
    • Scarps on every kind of fault, faults with historic displacement, ductile shear zones, and small inclined faults with strike and dip
  • Folds
    • Anticlines, antiforms, synclines, and synforms, with asymmetric, overturned, and inverted folds
    • Sheath folds, monoclines, plunging folds with arrowheads, and fold decorations
    • Small minor folds with strike and dip
  • Bedding, cleavage, and joints
    • Lineaments and joints, horizontal, inclined, and vertical
    • Bedding: horizontal, inclined, vertical, overturned, top direction known, graded, contorted, and approximate, with strike and dip
    • Cleavage: continuous, spaced, and crenulation cleavage
  • Foliation and lineation
    • Generic, igneous flow, cumulate, eutaxitic, metamorphic, gneissic, and mylonitic foliation with strike and dip
    • Lineation, slickenlines, rodding, mullions, boudins, intersection lineations, minor fold hinges, and crenulation lineations with bearing and plunge
  • Geophysics and tectonics
    • Boundaries and faults located by aeromagnetic, gravity, seismic, and other surveys
    • Geophysical contours and structure contours on three surfaces, with control points
    • Spreading axes, subduction zones, convergent plate boundaries, transform faults, basins, rises, and seamounts
  • Map elements
    • Highways, roads, railroads, route markers, and civil boundaries
    • Topographic, depression, bathymetric, and glacier contours
    • Rivers, canals, shorelines, lakes, marshes, falls, mines, wells, geysers, and other map features
    • Township and section lines, cross section lines, outcrop areas, and field stations
    • 39 bar scales and 114 magnetic declination arrows
    • The 678 line styles and 12 hatch patterns are also included as a line style set and a hatch pattern set for any other markup

Delivered as a Bluebeam Revu profile that loads all 8 tool sets, the line style set, and the hatch pattern set in one import, plus the individual tool set files, in standard colors and redline.

How to use

  • Import the profile (Revu > Profiles > Manage Profiles > Import, or double-click the .bpx file), or import single tool sets from the Tool Chest (Manage Tool Sets > Import).
  • Point symbols: click a tool, then click the sheet; type over a dip or plunge value to change it.
  • Line tools: click a tool, then click from point to point and double-click to finish. Drawn left to right, the teeth, hachures, and ticks fall on the side the standard shows; draw the other way to flip them.
  • Area tools: click a tool, click around the area, and double-click to finish.
